Kazakhtelecom and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) have demonstrated a 100-Gbps optical connection between Almaty and Taldykurgan, the systems developer says. The field trial showcased optical 100-Gbps connectivity across an existing active DWDM link.

The trial employed the Alcatel-Lucent 1626 Light Manager enhanced with 100G coherent technology through the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS). In addition to network capacity expansion, the trial also demonstrated that Kazakhtelecom could reduce operating and maintenance costs and lower power consumption, Alcatel-Lucent asserts.

According to Z.A. Zhamanbalanov, managing director of technical development at Kazakhtelecom, “Pioneering 100G in the CIS region, this demonstration proved that 100G live traffic is already possible over our existing optical network and offers us a significant step to meet current and future bandwidth demands with reduced time-to-market. This field trial shows that 100G technologies can scale our fiber links to the multi-terabit capacity necessary to handle this dramatic traffic growth and to position our network as a universal medium for the organization of the transit channels.”

This is the second venture between Alcatel-Lucent and Kazakhtelecom announced in the last two weeks. Kazakhstan’s major operator also has deployed Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON technology, it was revealed at the end of January (see “Kazakhtelecom deploys GPON FTTH network”).
