Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) says it is supplying Austrian mobile operator H3G with 100-Gbps technology for its backbone network. H3G and Alcatel-Lucent are installing the coherent transmission technology via an in-service upgrade.
H3G Austria’s network will now benefit from 100-Gbps coherent optical technology via Alcatel-Lucent’s 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) and 1626 Light Manager (LM). The 1830 PSS and 1626 LM will enable H3G to support a mix of 10G, 40G, and 100G channels on the same fiber pair, which means its existing optical infrastructure can be upgraded and expanded as needed.
Matthias Baldermann, CTO of H3G parent 3 Austria, said, “Due to the rapid growth in 3G mobile broadband we are facing new challenges for our data network. Additionally, the introduction of LTE will increase the need for capacity. With Alcatel-Lucent’s help we will now have the most powerful data transport network in Austria, which will play an important role in maintaining our position as the leading provider of mobile data services. Also, because we are able to add these new capabilities to our existing network, we are able to move quickly to expand our services offerings without incurring a huge expense.”
