SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 -- ONI Communications and Alcatel-Lucent inaugurate Portugal's first intelligent control-plane-based optical core network.

SEPTEMBER 16, 2009 -- Alcatel-Lucent has completed the deployment of a control-plane based optical network for ONI Communications (ONI), a leading Portuguese communications operator. Offering higher levels of network security and availability to its business customers, ONI expects to enhance the service quality of existing and new applications.

With the implementation of ASON/GMPLS technology, ONI says it is the first service provider in Portugal to use an intelligent control-plane-based optical network to offer the highest service quality. ONI can now negotiate differentiated service-level agreements with its customers. The carrier also benefits from automatic traffic provisioning, and a high level of network protection, operation, and maintenance capabilities for minimized operational expenditures.

"With the increased use of IP-based video and multimedia business applications, massive amounts of data must be handled by our network; thus we decided to implement an intelligent control-plane-based optical network," says Xavier Rodríguez-Martín, president and chief executive officer of ONI. "We selected Alcatel-Lucent based on its advanced, field-proven technological solution and local implementation capabilities."

"ONI decided to transform their optical core networks to manage the massive traffic increase occurring in their network," says António Beato Teixeira, head of Alcatel-Lucent's business in Portugal. "Alcatel-Lucent assisted ONI by deploying a solution that also enables to maintain the highest standard of service availability."

Alcatel-Lucent's intelligent control plane, based on Automatically Switched Optical Network/Generalized Multi-Protocol Label Switching (ASON/GMPLS) technology, offers dynamic networking and traffic protection. Alcatel-Lucent has deployed the technology in ONI's core transport network through the Alcatel-Lucent 1678 Metro Core Connect (MCC).
