OCTOBER 28, 2009 -- Huawei, a provider of telecom network technologies, was recently selected by Mediacom Communications, one of the United States' largest cable television companies, serving smaller cities and towns in the United States, to deploy next-generation DWDM (NG-DWDM) transport across over 4,000 km of Mediacom's backbone network through the states of Missouri, Iowa, and Minnesota.
Under the agreement, Huawei will provide Mediacom with its OSN6800A NG-WDM platform utilizing leading-edge in optical technologies with multidegree reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexing (ROADM), tunable optics, and Optical Transport Network (OTN) crossconnects. The network system will support 10/40G and future 100G wavelengths to deliver advanced, high-bandwidth services today and into the future.
"Huawei's dedicated support resources, understanding of our network requirements, and ability to meet our aggressive project delivery dates were key factors in selecting them as our partner for this project," says Greg Euker, director of IP networks, Mediacom. "Huawei's technology and solutions allowed us to migrate to a next-generation platform and cost-effectively deliver innovative services to meet the growing demands of our business and residential customers."
"This large scale deployment is an important project showcasing Huawei's commitment to the North American multiple system operators (MSO) space," notes Carl Liu, executive vice president of Huawei North America. "We are committed to delivering a quality network to Mediacom and continuously supporting our customers with high-quality products and services."
As part of Huawei's All-IP convergence strategy, the OSN6800 is a flexible and manageable WDM transport platform based on OTN and ASON (Automatically Switched Optical Network) architecture. The system is designed to help telecom operators build a flexible, IP/Ethernet-friendly, cost-efficient, and futureproof transport network. Huawei says its system supports rapid increases in traffic and fast network expansion challenges in a scalable and protocol-agnostic platform. The OSN6800 has been successfully deployed in the networks of operators in Asia-Pacific, Europe, and Latin America.
