Amplified CWDM trial completed

Oct. 1, 2002

Transmode Systems and UK carrier Vtesse Networks have completed a field trial of an amplified CWDM system over 200km.

Four CWDM channels of Gigabit Ethernet were transmitted over 125km of fibre by using one linear optical amplifier (from Genoa) as booster. Adding a further LOA could extend reach to 200km.

"CWDM offers the best balance between performance and cost-effectiveness", says Vtesse CTO Alan Mitchell. "The inclusion of Genoa LOAs into this CWDM transmission platform allows us to extend span lengths to 100km and beyond without needing to resort to much more expensive DWDM equipment".
