NOVEMBER 21, 2006 -- TV Cabo, a subsidiary of PT Multimedia and the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal, is using Harmonic's (search for Harmonic) portfolio of HFC broadband access equipment to optimize bandwidth efficiency in its cable television network. TV Cabo has implemented Harmonic's METROLink forward and return path transmitters for narrowcast applications. Harmonic now provides TV Cabo with a complete system, including MAXLink broadcast transmitters and receivers, PWRBlazer scalable nodes, and Harmonic's newest return path offering.
"By increasing the bandwidth available to each home, we can ensure a higher quality and wider range of services to our customers, including ultra high-speed Internet, video-on-demand, and voice capabilities. The tools provided by Harmonic are extremely important for the accomplishment of our goals," according to TV Cabo.
Cable operators around the world are facing increased levels of competition from telco operators introducing compelling IPTV services. In response, the ability to deliver a bundled triple-play video, voice, and high-speed data service is an important requirement for incumbent cable-TV service providers. Operators such as TV Cabo are segmenting their networks to make capacity available for these services and increase downstream and upstream bandwidth.
"Increased demand for narrowcast services is prompting cable operators to segment their networks," said Sunil Frida, senior manager of HFC solutions and strategy for Harmonic Inc. "Harmonic's technically innovative and market-leading transport solutions are selected by service providers worldwide to improve efficiency and deliver more dedicated bandwidth. Using the proven end-to-end Harmonic solution, TV Cabo can greatly expand the number and types of narrowcast services they can offer to their customers, enhancing their position in an extremely competitive environment."
