April 5, 2006 Petah Tikva, Israel -- ECI Telecom announced that Rede Electrica Nacional, S.A., (REN), the Portuguese electrical transmission company, will deploy ECI's optical platform to build its DWDM backbone network. REN says the network will provide it with the expansion flexibility to meet growing demand for next-generation services.

REN selected ECI as supplier for its DWDM networks following ECI's successful deployment of REN's SDH network. The Portuguese utility says it chose ECI's customized optical platform "based on its cutting-edge technology and cost-effectiveness."

"Out of all the competing vendors, ECI provided us with the best solution, meeting all our needs for adding an optical transmission layer to our network," comments Antonio Manuel Fonseca, manager of REN's IT division. "This new DWDM network will enable us to greatly increase bandwidth and offer advanced services in the energy sector."

The DWDM network, now in the deployment stage, will span over 1000 km in the northern and central parts of Portugal. Under the contract, REN will utilize ECI's XDM multi-service provisioning platform and LightSoft network management system.

"REN is a well-established industry leader in Portugal. We are pleased to continue building our successful relationship with them," remarks Shimon Levany, president of ECI Telecom's northwestern Europe business unit. "This deal further establishes ECI's strong position in the optical transmission market for utilities."
