April 19, 2006 Ottawa, Ontario -- Optiwave Systems, a provider of optical component and system design tools, has released its OptiSystem 5.0, the latest version of its optical communication system design suite. The company says the release delivers a number of features to facilitate the simulation and design of emerging optical communication technologies including free space optics (FSO) and radio over fiber (RoF) applications for wireless mesh network designs.

"As new optical networking technologies emerge in the dynamic optical communications market, we are very excited to release OptiSystem 5.0, addressing modern industry design trends," comments Jan Jakubczyk, president and CEO of Optiwave. "The simulation engine in OptiSystem 5.0 has been refined, improving simulation accuracy and convergence, making it faster than ever."

The company says the updated component libraries in OptiSystem 5.0 deliver "a comprehensive toolkit for progressive optical systems engineers." The upgraded software features an array of advanced component models, including optical sources, bit sequence generators, optical transmitters, multimode transmitters, measured-index multimode fiber, and optical receivers.

"The increasingly flexible design environment in OptiSystem 5.0 is paramount to meeting the needs of optical systems engineers," contends Jackson Klein, director of optical systems at Optiwave. "OptiSystem 5.0 users now have access to a number of comprehensive libraries allowing for complex optical amplifier and multimode fiber design. We are providing a complete design environment under one product platform."

Additional features in OptiSystem 5.0 include gain flattening filter optimization functionality, updated visualizers, and graphic user interface improvements. Application and validation projects have also been updated with the addition of support for passive optical networks (PON).
