NOVEMBER 11, 2010 -- India-based fiber and cable maker Sterlite Technologies Ltd. (BSE: 532374, NSE: STRTECH) has launched a new line of optical ground wire (OPGW) offerings that include application engineering, hardware supply, and installation.

The new portfolio comprises a suite of OPGW cables and related accessories, as well as such services as route survey, application engineering, live line/new line installation and commissioning, supply of active equipment, and integration support.

OPGWs combine the functions of grounding and communications in electrical power delivery applications. The OPGW cable is run between the tops of high-voltage electricity pylons. The conductive part of the cable serves to bond adjacent towers to earth ground and shields the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes. The optical fibers within the cable can be used for high-speed data transmission.

According to Siraj Bhattacharya, solution manager (OPGW) at Sterlite Technologies, "Our existing strengths in fiber-optic cables and power conductors engineering, complemented with our domain knowledge in integrating the total solution, is in line with expectations from our customers to provide a data transfer solution in addition to a power transmission solution. Through our OPGW solution offering, we have operationalized an extremely versatile setup, considering all the design options mapped to geo-technical conditions applicable globally."

Sterlite will debut the line at a trade show in South Africa. The company says its OPGW cables already have been certified by the South African Bureau of Standards. The OPGW portfolio will be immediately available in South Africa to power transmission utilities, large power plants, and telecom service providers planning to merge existing power line infrastructure for their long haul/access communication networks. Sterlite plans to launch the portfolio globally in the near future.
