MAY 27, 2010 – Discovery Semiconductors Inc. has introduced a new optical coherent system product for 10G, 20G, and 40G networks at the SubOptic conference in Yokohama, Japan. The live demonstration of the new Kitty Hawk system showed error-free performance with a commercially available SONET integrated qualification system through an XFP client interface, the company says.

At its facility in New Jersey, Discovery is setting up a SONET testbed for testing consumer applications, such as video content, using the new coherent system.

The new Optical Coherent System supports D(Q)PSK and DP-D(Q)PSK modulation formats to achieve 10G, 20G, and 40G data rates at 10-Gbaud symbol rate for spectral efficiency up to 0.8 b/s/Hz for 50-GHz grid spacing.

Kitty Hawk’s OSNR performance and built-in switchable electrical dispersion compensation give WDM system engineers new flexibility to upgrade networks, Discovery Semiconductor asserts. The system design does not require custom DSPs or analog-to-digital converters, so it is a quick and affordable upgrade for existing 2.5G and 10G networks, the company adds.
