MAY 7, 2010 -- Infinera (Nasdaq: INFN) says it has successfully deployed a transatlantic route of over 6,000 km for “a major global telecommunications service provider.” The new route provides the service provider 1.76 Tbps of optical capacity on a single fiber pair.
Infinera declined to identify the carrier. On its website, the systems house provides a case study for a similarly unidentified transatlantic network that runs from U.S. Northeast to the UK. Infinera has announced Global Crossing has used its equipment on its Mid Atlantic Crossing undersea network.
The Infinera Submarine Solution uses Infinera’s double-density technology to enable wavelengths to be implemented on a 25-GHz channel grid, twice the density of traditional DWDM optical systems implemented on a 50-GHz channel grid.
In addition to increasing capacity, the Infinera offering is intended to enable a submarine service provider to deliver new services while simultaneously increasing the space and power efficiency of the land-based submarine system.
Infinera launched the Infinera Submarine Solution last year (see “Infinera enters submarine market with new product, Global Crossing deployment”). It has been deployed in submarine networks in North America, the Caribbean, and South America, Infinera says.
