JUNE 14, 2007 -- Deltacom, a provider of integrated communications services to customers in the southeastern United States, has selected an Infinera (search for Infinera). Digital Optical Network for its regional network.

Based in Huntsville, AL, Deltacom provides a broad range of services over its 15,500 route-mile managed fiber-optic network, including Internet, data, and voice services.

Deltacom selected Infinera for the speed, simplicity, and capacity of the Infinera DTN system, according to the equipment vendor. Infinera's digital architecture is designed to provide 100 Gbits/sec of capacity on every line card. Infinera's GMPLS-powered IQ network operating system enables auto-discovery of network elements and automates the provisioning process, simplifying and speeding deployment and provisioning, Infinera says.

"Infinera's technology, based on photonic integrated circuits, is the latest technology in the marketplace," said Jim O'Brien, Deltacom's executive vice president of operations. "The engineering simplicity, combined with the rapid delivery of modules, brings optical networking deployment much closer to the "Just-in-Time" models that are widely used in manufacturing today, allowing Deltacom to respond to unforeseen capacity demand in a matter of days."

Infinera adds that O'Brien noted that the marketplace was experiencing demand for services driven by the growing popularity of broadband Internet applications like IPTV and web video, and growing enterprise demand for high-bandwidth applications including data center backup and disaster recovery.

"We are a unique provider," O'Brien said. "We have our own facilities-based network, and we go deep in all the states we serve. With our new network, we can rapidly turn up a range of services, from Gigabit Ethernet to 10-Gigabit waves, to meet the demands of our customers."

"Infinera is delighted to be supplying Deltacom a Digital Optical Network," said Infinera CEO Jagdeep Singh. "The Infinera solution is delivering value for Deltacom today, and our Digital Optical Networks vision, which envisages even greater capacities with more features and functionality integrated into the system, will deliver an even more powerful and intelligent network for customers in the future."

The Infinera DTN is architected to combine the scalability of high-capacity DWDM transport, the flexibility of digital bandwidth management, and the intelligence of digital GMPLS network automation in a single platform.
