NorthEast Optic Network Inc. (NEON--Waltham, MA), a New England-New York-based carriers` carrier, has purchased high-capacity optical networking systems from Nortel Networks (Brampton, ON, Canada). Under terms of a $20-million, three-year agreement, NEON will add Nortel`s latest generation of DWDM technology, which includes an initial capacity of up to 160 Gbits/sec, to its optical transport network. Currently in its final construction stage, NEON`s 680-mi optical backbone will integrate with existing and new OC-48 SONET rings to complete a transport network encompassing the geographical area between New York City and Maine.
