EPB Power and Fiber Optics, a municipally owned utility that provides electric power, internet, TV, and phone services to residential and business customers in Chattanooga, TN, has chosen Smartoptics to supply its DCP-M40 open line system platform. The utility, which has been a pioneer in gigabit broadband delivery, will deploy the DCP-M40 at each of its nodes and data centers.

Smartoptics says use of the open line systems will enable EPB to deliver 40 channels of any speed up to 400 Gbps over DWDM to each node across diverse paths, thus enabling network resiliency. The additional capabilities will be deployed across EPB’s existing fiber infrastructure.

EPB Fiber Optics, the broadband services arm of EPB, was the first U.S. service providers to deploy both gigabit broadband and followed that with 10-Gbps services via PON (see "EPB Fiber Optics offers 1 Gigabit broadband in Chattanooga via GPON" and "EPB brings 10-Gbps FTTH to Chattanooga").

“EPB is committed to our customers to provide world-leading network facilities across our service area,” commented Joe Freeman, manager, network engineering at EPB. “We are at the beginning of a multi-year network augmentation to scale our existing network infrastructure. In parallel we are moving from a consolidated network to a more distributed model that will enable us to push services closer to our 170,000 customers. I am confident that Smartoptics’ scalable, cost effective DCP-M40 platform is a key component in this growth-strategy that will allow us continue to innovate new customer offerings in the future.”
