FiberStreet selects Zaffire as primary optical networking supplier
FiberStreet, a next-generation communications infrastructure provider, announced that it has selected Zaffire, Inc. as its primary supplier of optical networking products and technologies. FiberStreet, which offers broadband IP access to enterprise customers, said it will deploy the Zaffire Z3000 dense wave division multiplexing (DWDM) optical service platform in early 2001. The contract is expected to generate $20 million in revenue for Zaffire over the next two years.
FiberStreet's broadband IP-based carrier business model is designed to deliver to large- and medium-sized businesses the kind of high-performance Gigabit Ethernet solutions typically only available to the very largest organizations. Targeted applications include desktop provisioning of massively scalable bandwidth services for the linkage of disparate local area networks, ultra high-speed network connectivity, and studio-quality videoconferencing. In addition, Zaffire's Z3000 platform makes possible the provision of very high bandwidth on an instantaneous basis.
Using its patent-pending DWDM optical service platform, in conjunction with its IZOS cross-platform operating system and Z-Manager management system, Zaffire's Z3000 employs digital wrapper technology to help carriers solve the problem of bandwidth capacity bottlenecks in the metro and regional market and intelligently manage the fiber optics links between long-haul carriage and last-mile access. Zaffire's advanced optical services architecture controls bandwidth provisioning with its combination of optical, Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs)-based, and software-based technologies. Zaffire's fractional wavelength technology and multi-protocol label switching (MPLS) enable different traffic types to be combined on a single wavelength while participating in the optical and electrical domains. Its system has the ability to significantly reduce maintenance costs by eliminating certain network elements including digital cross-connects and SONET add/drop multiplexers (ADMs).
