West Bay Semiconductor unveils framer for optical networking applications to 2.5 Gbits/sec

November 8, 2001--West Bay Semiconductor (Vancouver, BC) today announced the shipment of samples of its channelized framer, the WB1500, to multiple customers globally. The WB1500 is a fully-integrated channelized framer and overhead processor for SONET/SDH-based systems, and operates at 1 x 2.5 Gbits/sec, or 4 x 622 Mbits/sec modes.

The WB1500 targets high density telecommunications and data communications equipment, built for the WAN and metro edges of the network, including multi-service routers, switches, access concentrators, add/drop multiplexers and dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems, used to aggregate large amounts of end-user traffic over T1, E1, J1, and DS3, wireless DSL and other transmission pipes.

Features include an overhead termination capability with path bit error rate monitoring (BERM) and West Bay's Automatic online Error Recognition Technology (ALERT) to monitor the device's performance and report inconsistencies real time to the network operator. Channelized to the STS-1/AU-3 level, the WB1500 features a complete STS-1/VC-3 time-slot interchange to support traffic grooming and automatic protection switching, incorporating alarm detection and extensive performance monitoring.

In 622-Mbits/sec mode, the WB1500 connects directly to optics using serial STS-12/STM-4 line interfaces, eliminating four external mux/demux devices to save board space, power dissipation, and cost.

The device offers on-chip, fully-integrated SONET/SDH functionality, and addresses the requirements of both SONET and SDH standards, targeting its use for equipment designed for use worldwide. Channelized equipment enables service providers to deliver multiple types of traffic such as voice, video, and data, cost effectively over their existing SONET/SDH networks.

Packaged in a 34 mm x 35 mm, 648 pin TBGA, and priced at USD $385 in 10,000 quantity units, samples can be ordered directly from West Bay or its distribution network. A support package completes the product offering, including a reference design, C language device drivers, IBIS and BSCL models, and application notes.
