ADVA installs Fiber Service Platform in Pan-European rollout of Internet exchange points

May 14, 2001--ADVA Optical Networking, Telindus and XchangePoint announced a contract for the first stage in a multi-city project to implement the Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 3000 in metro-area networks

ADVA Optical Networking, Telindus and XchangePoint announced a contract for the first stage in a multi-city project to implement the Fiber Service Platform (FSP) 3000 in metro-area networks.

ADVA's 32-channel Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexer (DWDM) solution FSP 3000 will be installed by XchangePoint, a new UK-based service provider, to connect dark fiber rings across sites within a city and to interconnect between high-volume peering customers as and when required. XchangePoint is expanding its infrastructure to build state-of-the-art Internet exchange point facilities for inter-ISP peering and private data traffic exchange in major European cities. The pan-European rollout starts in London in May 2001 and will extend over major cities within the next 12 months.

Implementing ADVA's integrated, transparent, DWDM-based metro solutions enables XchangePoint to offer various services in a flexible manner with dynamic provisioning for multi-client services. This is achieved using Time Division Multiplexing (TDM, sub lambda multiplexing) on a single wavelength and DWDM for multiple wavelengths over a single optical fiber pair. Through the FSP Management Suite, XchangePoint can manage the network from customer premise site to its central office, managing and deploying services at each node at the customer's request.

ADVA's FSP 3000 has been developed for the metro-area networks of service providers who require solutions for the transportation of high bit-rate data, storage, voice, and video applications. The modular architecture of the FSP 3000 is NEBS/ETSI compliant with hot-swappable modules that enable customer applications and services to be deployed on-demand. The system is specifically designed for optical networks with features such as fast service provisioning, conversion, multiplexing, protection, and network management. The transparent FSP 3000 supports all protocols between 100 Mbit/s and 10AGbit/s, including STM-1/-4/-16/-64,A OC-3/-12/-48/-192, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, FDDI, ATM, ESCON, FICON, or any proprietary protocol operating within the specified data range.

The FSP 3000 hardware design, coupled with the benefits of DWDM technology, enables the system to support point-to-point, linear add/drop, and ring network topologies with up to nine nodes. With the FSP Management Suite and the optical supervisory channel, the entire FSP 3000 network can be centrally managed and maintained.
