Telxius achieves 550 Gbps/wavelength during BRUSA submarine network trial

Jan. 21, 2020
The transmission trial leveraged Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optical engine.

Telxius, the infrastructure arm of Telefónica Group, has achieved 550-Gbps on a single-channel wavelength across its BRUSA submarine network, according to Ciena (NYSE: CIEN). The transmission trial leveraged Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Extreme (WL5e) coherent optical engine. Telxius was able to verify a total per-fiber-pair capacity of more than 20 Tbps, equating to a total undersea system capacity of more than 160 Tbps, Ciena asserts.

BRUSA runs approximately 10,200 km between Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Virginia Beach, VA (see "Telefónica's BRUSA submarine network to link Brazil and the U.S."). It opened for service August 2018 and serves the capacity needs of telecom operators, OTT service providers, and others through direct connections to internet exchanges in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

WaveLogic 5 Extreme is an element of Ciena’s GeoMesh Extreme optical networking portfolio. The company says that, besides establishing transmission speed records, the trial also demonstrated the benefits of the open cable network designs, rapid scalability, and lower total cost of network ownership that GeoMesh Extreme enables.

“WaveLogic 5 Extreme opens the door to a more scalable submarine network, which can support our customers as they continue to embrace new technologies that require unprecedented levels of bandwidth,” commented Carlos Dasi, Telxius’ Cable CTO. “This remarkable achievement is another example of how our collaboration with Ciena enables us to not only visualize what’s possible for our network, but to turn those possibilities into reality.”
