Angola Cables trials Nokia PSE-3 chipset transmission across SACS, Monet submarine networks

Angola Cables is conducting a trial of coherent transmission between the USA and Africa that leverages Nokia’s Photonic Service Engine 3 (PSE-3) chipset, according to the communications technology supplier. The route between the two continents combines the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS) and Monet submarine networks.

Angola Cables owns and manages SACS, which runs between Fortaleza, Brazil, and Luanda, Angola (see "Angola Cables announces launch of South Atlantic Cable System"). The service provider also is a member of the consortium behind Monet, alongside Algar Telecom, Antel, and Google (see “Monet submarine cable system linking Florida to Brazil ready for service”; Angola Cables also operates the WACS submarine cable system, which is not part of this trial). Monet connects Santos/Fortaleza in Brazil with Florida. Linking the two enables a connection from Africa to the U.S. via Fortaleza. In the trial, Angola Cables is able to transmit 300-Gbps wavelengths between Luanda and Miami with low latency, Nokia says.

The trial leverages Nokia's 1830 Photonic Service Interconnect (PSI) data center interconnect (DCI) platform equipped with the PSE-3. The optical transmissions are being made across 12,635 km of submarine cable, benefiting from the chipset’s use of probabilistic constellation shaping.

“With Nokia’s PSE-3, Angola Cables can optically interconnect the Monet and SACS submarine fiber optic cables, enabling more capacity and a further reduction in latency between content providers in North America and the rapidly growing data consumption markets in Africa,” commented Fernando Azevedo, Technical Director at Angola Cables.

“Africa is a strategic growth market for Nokia across both our core CSP and webscale businesses,” added Sam Bucci, head of optical networking at Nokia. “We are proud to partner with Angola Cables to apply our ground-breaking PSE-3 technology to a unique and challenging subsea route, helping to deliver enhanced services to a rapidly developing part of the world.”
