Angola Cables increases MONET submarine cable capacity via Ciena

May 10, 2021
The additional capacity arrives as Angola Cables ramps up its new Tier III data center, AngoNAP Fortaleza in Brazil.

Angola Cables has turned to Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) to help it increase the capacity of its fibers on the MONET submarine cable. Ciena says Angola Cables has added 2.2 Tbps of capacity to MONET submarine network segments that link Miami, Fortaleza, and São Paulo using the technology supplier’s GeoMesh technology portfolio with include WaveLogic Ai coherent optical transmission capabilities.

The additional capacity arrives as Angola Cables ramps up its new Tier III data center, AngoNAP Fortaleza in Brazil. Angola Cables also is using the GeoMesh capabilities on the link between São Paulo and Miami to optically bypass the cable landing stations, which Ciena says will reduce power, space, and operational complexity. In addition, Angola Cables is using Ciena’s Manage, Control and Plan (MCP) domain controller for network visibility and monitoring.

“In a time of rapid, mass digital adoption, the network needs to be able to handle the ever-growing demands from end-users. Ciena’s GeoMesh solution has allowed us to expand our submarine cable network to reach a wider range of customers with more bandwidth and improved services,” said Angelo Gama, CEO of Angola Cables.

Angola Cables partnered with Algar Telecom, Antel, and Google on construction of the MONET submarine cable, which became operational in 2018 (see “Monet submarine cable system connecting Brazil to Florida is operational”). The international services provider also is a partner on the South Atlantic Cable System (SACS), and West Africa Cable System (WACS).
