Proximus (nee Belgacom) has successfully completed a test transmission of a 1-Tbps superchannel using technology from Huawei, the Chinese communications technology vendor says. The event was the first terabit field trial of Huawei's superchannel Optical Transport Network (OTN) Card.

The trial demonstrated that Proximus has a clear migration path to 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 1 Tbps using the same Huawei chassis, the systems house asserts. This would result in a fiber-optic backbone capacity of 20 Tbps.

Proximus and Huawei conducted the trial over a 1,040 km link with flexible grid capabilities and Huawei's Optical Switch Node (OSN) 9800 platform. The use of such superchannel technology can improve spectral efficiency by approximately 150% versus conventional 100-Gbps coherent optical transmission, Huawei says.

"At Proximus we pledge to satisfy the evolving customers demand by investing in new technologies to offer them the best quality and service," said Geert Standaert, CTO at Proximus. "Together with Huawei we want to let our network infrastructure evolve to support current and future bandwidth demands and offer our customers an outstanding user experience."
