Newly re-energized optical transport systems vendor Sorrento Networks International has jumped into the 100-Gbps DWDM market with the GigaMux 3300. The company touts the new DWDM platform's low cost of deployment and compact footprint as major selling points.

The DWDM system features what Sorrento describes as an "innovative optics engine" that enables the cost of coherent transmission to meet metro requirements. The GigaMux 3300 will support reaches of 1500 km without regeneration. Its use of electronic dispersion compensation combined with coherent transmission technology enables operation over low quality fiber plant. The system will support 80 channels of 100 Gbps when used with GigaMux 3200 photonic filters.

Sorrento also touts the fact that users of the GigaMux 3200 can deploy the GigaMux 3300 to multiplex their 10G services to 100G to free wavelengths for future use, as well as transmit 100G signals over spare channels in existing GigaMux 3200 fiber infrastructure without plant re-engineering.

"The new normal is rapidly becoming the 100G speed for bandwidth services, and the GigaMux 3300 offers an easy and cost-effective path for service providers to achieve this," asserts John Mitchell, director of product management at Sorrento Networks. "We see many of our customers eager to deploy such speeds, but are hampered by the challenges of laying or renting new fiber. This offers a fast and cost-effective solution and represents a significant enhancement to the Sorrento Networks GigaMux product portfolio."

The new platform comes in the wake of Sorrento's acquisition by The Comtek Group and relaunch earlier this year (see "Sorrento Networks tries again"). The new management promised product upgrades, and the GigaMux 3300 attests to their sincerity.
