Optical transport systems vendor ADVA Optical Networking says it has supplied its ROADM-enabled ADVA FSP 3000 packet-optical transport system to Telecom Italia for uses in large-scale metro fiber-optic networks. Use of the platform enables Telecom Italia to scale capacity to 100-Gbps per wavelength while streamlining the deployment of new services, the systems house asserts.

The Italian service provider now can supply expanded connectivity to what ADVA asserts is "every major Italian city." The platforms enable a dynamic network architecture and flexible service routing, as well as encryption, ADVA adds (see "ADVA Optical Networking offers 100G encryption for metro networks").

"Our business clients expect service agility and our residential customers want to be able to stream video whenever they choose," explained Andrea Calvi, head of transport and data networks, Telecom Italia. "Now with the ADVA FSP 3000 our network is bringing ultra-high capacity connectivity to the home and the enterprise. We're also pleased with how easy and smooth the process has been. From testing to implementation, our relationship with ADVA Optical Networking's team has proved to be as vital as the technology. We've worked closely with their engineers at every stage, from laboratory trials in Germany and Italy to collaborating on the fast deployment. That's helped to ensure that any issues are quickly dealt with and high quality is maintained throughout."

"This has been an exciting project right from the start. Telecom Italia has a passion for delivering more to its customers. It believes deeply in harnessing the most advanced technology available and we're proud to be the first vendor to enable them to transmit 100 Gbps in their metropolitan networks," commented Marcello Forti, VP, sales Italy, ADVA Optical Networking.
