Coriant 8625 Smart Router for metro edge offers IP/MPLS, converged IP/optical capabilities

Coriant has added the Coriant 8625 Smart Router for metro edge and pre-aggregation network applications to its IP/MPLS routing portfolio. In addition to offering IP/MPLS support, the platform also can leverage a new converged IP/optical offering, the Coriant 8625-O.

The 8625 will scale to 1 Tbps of capacity (full duplex), says Coriant. However, its initial release will support up to 400 Gbps and with 1G and 10G IP/Ethernet service interfaces. It will accommodate a mix of IP and Ethernet services, such as IP VPNs, VPLS, and Ethernet pseudowires. The system also will offer what Coriant describes as "significant buffering capacity" for bursty data applications. It also will host traffic management features with hierarchical QoS support for flexible end-user service definition.

To support mobile backhaul applications, the Coriant 8625 Smart Router will have integrated synchronization capabilities optimized for LTE/LTE-A backhaul and emerging 5G network architectures, including IEEE1588v2 and Synchronous Ethernet.

"As end-user mobile and cloud applications drive ever-increasing capacity demands in access and aggregation networks, operators face the ongoing challenge of cost-efficiently scaling network infrastructure without sacrificing service performance," said Mikko Hannula, director of product management at Coriant. "The 8625 is an ideal solution that meets the logical scalability and low latency transport requirements of evolving aggregation applications, while providing the operational efficiencies and service agility of SDN programmability and network slicing to cater to the different requirements of heterogeneous services."

In the optical realm, the 8625-O is the newest member of Coriant's Light IP Solution set, designed to integrate IP capabilities with the optical layer in a software-defined networking/network functions virtualization (SDN/NFV) environment (see "Coriant targets IP/optical integration with Light IP Solution"). Coriant says the 8625-O offers pluggable optical layer flexibility and cost-efficiencies.
