BTI Systems, Inc. says that VKontakte (VK), which BTI says is the largest social network in Europe, has deployed elements of the BTI 7000 Series optical transport equipment and related software to interconnect its data centers.

Founded in 2007, VK offers users the ability to connect through private messaging, sharing photos, managing online communities, and uploading, searching and streaming media content. Available in three languages including English, Russian and Ukrainian, more than 100 million active users around the world use VK to make new connections and reconnect with past friends.

“We reached the point where we had to make a move to support our massive growth and demand for increased bandwidth capacity,” said VK principal engineer Oleg Lyubimov. “With six data centers in St. Petersburg and points of presence in Moscow, Frankfurt, and Stockholm, we needed a solution that would enable us to scale, simplify management and operations, and reduce costs. BTI worked closely with us to achieve our goals and move toward connections of 100G. We are saving more than 35% in footprint space and more than 15% in lower power consumption, all while drastically improving performance and reducing operational complexity.”

BTI worked closely with certified reseller Muvicom to secure the VK customer win. The local support and market presence in Russia were also key factors in selecting BTI as a partner, according to VK.

VK has deployed BTI’s Data Center Interconnect system, including the BTI 7000 Series as well as the BTI proNX management and control software. The BTI 7000 Series systems unify packet and optical service delivery into one platform for network-layer consolidation; they offer VK a scalable 10G to 100G growth path and simplify network deployment and operations, BTI says. BTI adds that itss proNX software expedites service provisioning, simplifies monitoring and management, and speeds time to deployment.

VK also plans to deploy the new BTI 7800 Series Intelligent Cloud Connect when they add 100G capabilities, the systems vendor says.
