ADVA Optical Networking (FSE: ADV) says that Hetzner Online, a German data center network operator, has deployed ADVA’s 100G Core technology throughout its backbone fiber-optic network.

Hetzner Online is using ADVA's 100G coherent transmission technology to increase capacity in response to the growth in video traffic and other bandwidth-intensive applications. The operator was able to rapidly deploy the ADVA 100G Core by plugging it into its existing 10G network, according to ADVA.

“Customers expect access to online information instantly. What's more, they expect robust and reliable service. To do this requires bandwidth and lots of it. That's why 100G is so critical. Thankfully with ADVA Optical Networking's turnkey solution, bandwidth is never a problem. We simply plugged the ADVA 100G Core into our legacy 10G network and turned it on,” said Martin Fritzsche, head of network administration, Hetzner Online.

Stretching more than 250 km, Hetzner’s backbone network is now capable of carrying 100G data signals between data centers in Nuremberg, Frankfurt, and Falkenstein. Hetzner Online expects the new 100G capacity to further drive its competitive advantage.

ADVA’s 100G Core is built on coherent receivers which offers increased non-linear optical tolerance and is compatible with many existing legacy networks. This compatibility means operators no longer need to strip out their existing infrastructure to benefit from 100G connectivity, the vendor says.

In addition to the 100G Core offering, ADVA offers a metro-focused approach based on 4x28-Gbps direct-detect technology (see “ADVA Optical Networking offers cost-reduced 100-Gbps for metro networks”).
