Chunghwa Telecom selects Alcatel for $110-million intelligent optical network rollout
Alcatel has been awarded a $110-million contract from Chunghwa Telecom (CHT), Taiwan's incumbent telecommunications operator. Alcatel will provide CHT with a nationwide network based on SDH equipment.
The contract marks the first time a Taiwanese service provider will deploy 10-Gbit/sec equipment. With Alcatel's 10-Gbit/sec system, CHT will provide its customers with much-needed bandwidth and pave the way for its broadband network rollout.
Alcatel's OPTINEX family of transmission products will be part of the network expansion. This consists of Alcatel's Optical Multi-service Nodes at all SDH levels, from customer premises equipment to backbone network systems, all managed by a centralized and fully integrated network management platform. Besides enabling CHT to offer improved quality of service today, the transmission infrastructure can expand to include fully integrated and managed data services like ATM, Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, and Internet protocol.
Alcatel and CHT's business relationship began in September of 2001 with CHT's purchase of Alcatel's intelligent networks and switching equipment.
