QTnet of Japan taps Ciena for fiber-optic network upgrade

Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) says it will supply its 6500 Packet-Optical Platform to QTnet, which provides cable, internet, video, and broadband services to customers on the island of Kyushu, Japan. As the island is disaster prone, improved resiliency is a major goal for the fiber-optic network upgrade.

The third largest island in Japan, Kyushu and QTnet's subscribers have experienced typhoons, major storms, and earthquakes over the past several years. Therefore, the network managers at the service provider were looking for more than just greater capacity.

“For our network upgrade, we needed a high-capacity solution that can provide higher reliability and that can also withstand large-scale natural disasters. By selecting Ciena’s WaveLogic Ai [the coherent engine at the heart of the 6500], we are convinced that we can give our customers high-capacity, reliable, and stable service,” commented Sadao Mouri, director and senior managing executive officer at QTnet. The 6500’s colorless, directionless, contentionless (CDC) photonic layer and Layer 0 control plane for self-healing capabilities contribute to the improved resiliency, according to Ciena.

QTnet offers a variety of services on Kyushu that target several customer demographics. BBIQ is a fiber-optic internet-access service for consumers, QT Mobile is a MVNO mobile service, and QT PRO is a network service for enterprises and local governments. All should benefit not only from increased fiber network resiliency, but the ability of the WaveLogic Ai to support 400-Gbps wavelengths as well as reduce power and footprint, says Ciena.
