UTStarcom launches NG-PTN packet-optical transport line with metro access, aggregation platforms

UTStarcom (NASDAQ: UTSI) has unveiled the NG-PTN product line for packet-optical transport network applications. The first three platforms in the new portfolio, the TN701B, TN703A, and TN704A, serve metro access and aggregation requirements.

The NG-PTN family will aim to deliver cost-effective, scalable, agile, and intelligent metro transport, UTStarcom says. The platforms will feature a software-defined networking (SDN) based dynamic control plane for connection-oriented MPLS-TP/CE transport networks; they will support full integration with the company's SOO Network SDN platform. It line uses the system house's NetRing 700 Series PTN product family as a foundation, with enhanced 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) interface support, automation features, and support of advanced services, according to UTStarcom.

Looking at the three initial elements of the NG-PTN family individually, the TN701B is an access device with 10-Gbps capacity and support of Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. It also can be used to support deployment and backhauling of Wi-Fi networks, thanks to support of Power over Ethernet.

UTStarcom says the TN703A is positioned as a higher-level access device. It offers 64-Gbps capacity in a 1RU enclosure that supports 10GbE/GbE/STM-1/E1 interfaces. The TN704A can be used as a low-level aggregation device; it offers 136-Gbps capacity in a 2RU enclosure with 10GbE/GbE/STM-1/E1 interfaces.

The company sees the NG-PTN family as applicable to a variety of metro-related applications, including LTE/LTE-A mobile backhaul, metro aggregation networks, and enterprise network services support, among others.
