February 25, 2002--Luminous Networks and Photonic Bridges today announced that China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has certified Luminous' PacketWave access platform for metropolitan area networks. The certification enables Luminous to ship its voice/data optical access systems to the largest telecommunications providers in China for the build-out of the country's metro networks.

Luminous Networks and Photonic Bridges today announced that China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has certified Luminous' PacketWave access platform for metropolitan area networks. The certification enables Luminous to ship its voice/data optical access systems to the largest telecommunications providers in China for the build-out of the country's metro networks.

Network design and deployment of Luminous' equipment in China has been achieved by Photonic Bridges, an emerging communication equipment company supplying next-generation network solutions who worked with MII to achieve certification of Luminous' product.

Luminous' PacketWave metro platform is based on Resilient Packet Transport (RPT) technology, a superset of the emerging IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) standard for metro area networks. The MII certification affirms China's commitment to deploy the most advanced metro networking technology in its telecommunications networks; China plans to spend $151 billion (1.25 trillion yuan[NM1]) on its telecommunications infrastructure by 2005, according to a five-year-plan summary published by the MII.

Luminous' PacketWave access platform successfully passed an extensive battery of voice and data tests performed by the MII in their Beijing lab. These included tests of PacketWave's throughput, latency, quality of service, and network management. The tests covered delivery of traditional Ethernet services; transparent Ethernet lease line services; TDM lease line services; and interoperability with other vendors' equipment for Ethernet, TDM, and PBX voice services.

China Netcom is deploying Luminous' metro platform in nine cities, including Shanghai, Dalian, Guangzhou, Foshan, Shunde, Mianyang, Quanzhou, Shaoxing, and Jiaxing, spanning five provinces. Network design, engineering, and installation, performed by Photonic Bridges, has been completed in six cities, with the remaining three set for early this year.
