- Higher costs, security, and reliability concerns deter U.S. companies from implementing carrier solutions

14 August 2003 Boston MA -- 43% of U.S. businesses surveyed that have deployed a metro Ethernet solution built it themselves, in contrast to 21% that implemented a carrier-supplied solution, reports communications and networking research company Yankee Group.

"Users are demanding secure, reliable networks, evidenced by their continuing desire for private, non-shared resources," said Bryan Van Dussen, Yankee's director of Telecommunications Strategies.

"Network managers are comfortable with the maturity and stability of Ethernet, but 80 percent say that network security and reliability remain top issues. Metro Ethernet services must address these concerns in order to compete effectively."

According to the Yankee Group's recently-released 2003 Metro Ethernet Survey 90% of the 350 enterprises canvassed had deployed metro Ethernet solutions, with the additional 10% planning to implement this type of network within the next 12 months.

The 2003 Metro Ethernet Survey is a qualitative and quantitative assessment of enterprise use of, plans for, and experience with metro Ethernet services. The survey provides network integrators, vendors, and service providers with critical information that can help shape product strategies and identify market opportunities.
