Integra adds 100 Gbps to fiber-optic network with Ciena

April 11, 2013
Network service provider Integra will use packet-optical transport and packet networking platforms from Ciena to bring 100-Gbps capabilities to its long-haul network. The service provider will use the new capabilities to offer low-latency 100-Gbps services to enterprise and wholesale customers including healthcare facilities, financial institutions, and content providers.

Network service provider Integra will use packet-optical transport and packet networking platforms from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) to bring 100-Gbps capabilities to its long-haul network. The service provider will use the new capabilities to offer low-latency 100-Gbps services to enterprise and wholesale customers including healthcare facilities, financial institutions, and content providers.

Integra operates in 35 metropolitan markets. Its infrastructure includes a 5000-mile long-haul fiber-optic network, 3,000 miles of metro fiber, and a nationwide IP/MPLS network. It selected Ciena to supply the 100G technology because of “its advanced technology capabilities, future product roadmap, and commitment to operational efficiency,” according to a press release.

"Integra selects vendors that align with our long-term goals for network expansion and market growth. Ciena's platforms are very well suited to our business strategy," said Jason Koenders, senior vice president, engineering and network planning at Integra. "Leveraging Ciena's 6500 packet-optical platform and packet networking portfolio helps us deliver best-in-class bandwidth while minimizing network latency, for customers who demand high-performance, future-proofed capabilities from their networks."

The company will use Ciena's 6500 packet optical series for long-haul and metro network integration. The systems will enable Integra's Wavelength services, for instance, provide up to a 15% latency reduction and very high bandwidth. As part of its initial roll out, Integra will target large enterprises that require reliable, secure, and data-intensive network services in such metropolitan markets as Seattle, Portland, Santa Clara, Phoenix, and Las Vegas.
