Alcatel, Huawei, and NEC join RPR Alliance to solve high-speed MAN bottleneck

Aug. 20, 2001--The Resilient Packet Ring Alliance, an industry advocacy group promoting the standardization of resilient packet ring technology, announced increased international support for the technology with the addition of three new global members.

The Resilient Packet Ring Alliance, an industry advocacy group promoting the standardization of resilient packet ring (RPR) technology, announced increased international support for the technology with the addition of three new global members. RPR is a new and highly scalable layer 2 technology that addresses the bandwidth limitations resulting from growing data traffic in carrier networks.

Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA), a provider of intelligent optical networking; Huawei Tech Co., a provider of customized solutions for telecom carriers in China; and NEC Corporation (NASDAQ: NIPNY), a provider of global Internet solutions, have joined the RPR Alliance, increasing RPR�s membership to 16 optical networking and chip companies. Alcatel, Huawei, and NEC will join other global members to promote RPR for data-optimized networks throughout the United States, Europe, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and other markets.

The RPR Alliance was founded to support the standardization effort and educate the global market on the benefits of RPR. The Alliance provides input on the technology and market dynamics impacting RPR technology to the IEEE 802.17 working group that is developing the RPR standard, the first draft of which is expected in Q1 2002. The working group is assigned with defining a Media Access Control (MAC) protocol that will be used in local area, metropolitan area, and wide area networks (LANs, MANs, and WANs). With RPR, metropolitan area service providers can create high-speed, survivable ring networks designed for Internet protocol and other packet data. Moreover, compatibility and interoperability amongst RPR vendors will be a priority, thus allowing providers to create global networks without being overly reliant on one vendor's equipment.

The RPR MAC is also PHY-layer agnostic, enabling carriers to leverage their incumbent Ethernet or SONET infrastructure."
