BT deploys Nokia 7750 SR-s router platform

April 16, 2019
BT has launched deployments of Nokia's 7750 Service Router (SR)-s as part of a backbone network upgrade project. The SR-s rollout complements BT’s fielded Nokia 7750 SR and 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) platforms, says the technology provider.

BThas launched deployments of Nokia's 7750 Service Router (SR)-s as part of a backbone network upgrade project. The SR-s rollout complements BT’s fieldedNokia 7750 SR and 7950 Extensible Routing System (XRS) platforms, says the technology provider.

Last May, BT announced additional investment plans for fiber to the premises (FTTP) and 5G infrastructure (see "BT pledges increased FTTP, mobile infrastructure investments as part of new strategy"). "BT's FTTP footprint is growing on a daily basis, and we are launching 5G this year in the busiest parts of 16 of the UK's busiest cities. These technologies create an amazing customer experience, and drive people to watch more, play more, and share more. We have to stay ahead of the massive traffic growth that this will bring, and Nokia are a key part of that, giving us the capacity and automation that we need," according to Howard Watson, BT Group CTIO.

Use of the 7750 SR-s platforms, which leverage Nokia’s multi-terabit FP4 network processor silicon, will add capacity to BT’s converged backbone network to keep pace with traffic growth of approximately 40% annually, Nokia asserts (see "Nokia offers new 7750 Service Router, 7950 Extensible Routing System based on multi-terabit FP4 chipset"). The system also will help BT in its move toward increased network intelligence and automation, the company adds.
