July 18, 2006 Herndon, VA -- RCN Corp. announced today that RCN Business Solutions, a transport, Internet, and bulk video and voice service provider, has rolled out a Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) Ethernet network throughout the metropolitan New York area. The MPLS network is expected to improve reliability and allows for the launch of future advanced, value-added services.

The upgraded Ethernet Network now supports Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) for Layer 2 and Layer 3, point-to-point, and multipoint services, and provides enhanced availability and reliability of services provided to the business group's enterprise and carrier customers. It is also highly scalable, which the company believes will enable it to meet increased network demand for the foreseeable future. RCN Business Solutions plans to introduce a variety of cutting-edge, enhanced services later this year.

According to Felipe Alvarez, president of RCN Business Solutions, "We are excited about the advanced capabilities our customers will now receive with the rollout of our MPLS/VPLS network. This new technology, combined with our diverse fiber-optic network capabilities, ensures that customers will have access to an advanced and highly-secure network to meet their long-term needs."

Services provided on the MPLS network are attractive to customers as the network delivers the highest quality services, without interruption, even as network demands increase. RCN customers also gain a wider breadth and granularity of network services from which they can choose, such as virtual private networks (VPNs).

RCN anticipates that it will be able to offer differentiated network services based upon priorities and/or service plan levels, which would allow customers to purchase premium services and prioritize their traffic (e.g., voice, video, and data) for peak performance. In addition, MPLS's segmentation feature ensures that RCN's network traffic is balanced, throughput is optimized and troubles are isolated and contained.
