Nortel, Brampton, ON, Canada, has joined Telecommunicaoes de Sao Paulo and the University of Campinas to support Brazil?s multimode communications project?Multicom 21. The three have agreed to establish a fiber-optic atm network in Sao Paulo. The network will contain a donated Nortel OC-48 (2.5-Gbit/sec) transmission system and feature a network management system. The telemedicine and education network will connect the Sao Paulo Hospital of the Federal University of Sao Paulo, the University of Sao Paulo, and the Sao Paulo Heart Institute. Network operations are scheduled to begin by the third quarter of 1998.
