VI Systems shipping 28-Gbps VCSEL TOSA

VI Systems GmbH says it has launched shipments of arted to ship its first 28-Gbps transmitter optical subassembly (TOSA). The T40-850 combines the company’s proprietary 850-nm ultra-high-speed VCSEL and its newest SiGe BiCMOS integrated driver circuit. The overall power consumption is less than 150 mW, VI Systems asserts.

The T40-850 combines the company’s proprietary 850-nm ultra-high-speed VCSEL and its newest SiGe BiCMOS integrated driver circuit. The overall power consumption is less than 150 mW, VI Systems asserts.

Target applications include proprietary optical links at 40 Gbps and 100 Gbps and standard applications like Fibre Channel at 14 Gbps (16GFC) and the new standard at 28 Gbps (32GFC), InfiniBand at 14 Gbps (FDR) and at 26 Gbps (EDR), and future 100-Gbps Ethernet applications.

The TOSA comes in a hermetic package fiber coupled with a 50/125-micron multimode fiber. The device measures 5x5 mm at an overall length of 30 mm, including a strain relief boot to protect the fiber.

The first devices are fiber coupled and terminated with a FC/PC connector. VI Systems says it plans to release a receptacle type in the second quarter of 2012.

The T40-850 TOSA evaluation kit is available now. It consists of a TOSA mounted to the adaptor board AB-10-HT. The adaptor board features an impedance matched design with high-speed coaxial connection to enable easy connection of the data signals and separate pins for the supply voltage.
