Mindspeed burst-mode transimpedance amplifier targets EPON

Sept. 6, 2011
Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: MSPD) has announced a 1.25-Gbps complement to its 10-Gbps EPON burst-mode receiver chipset for EPON optical line termination (OLT) receiver equipment. The M02038 1.25 Gbps transimpedance amplifier (TIA) for OLT equipment can be used with the company’s previously announced M02028 continuous-mode 1.25 Gbps TIA for subscriber-side optical networking units (ONUs) to tackle both ends of an EPON link.

The M02038 TIA features a burst-mode receiver average power monitor output capability that enables the device to report upstream ONU burst-mode optical transmit power in fast settling time, according to Mindspeed. This feature is designed to eliminate the need for additional external circuitry in OLT modules for performing this function.

Performance attributes include optical sensitivity exceeding -34 dBm, -6 dBm overload; and burst-to-burst dynamic range of greater than 25 dB with a 200-ns burst settling time.

The M02038 TIA is delivered in die form and manufactured using standard CMOS. It is currently shipping in volume.

“We are very pleased to design in Mindspeed’s TIAs for GEPON ONU and OLT applications in several of our optical transceiver products,” said Dr. David Li, CTO of Hisense Broadband Multimedia Technology Co., Ltd. “Mindspeed TIAs deliver superior optical sensitivity along with many other performance advantages. These best-in-class GEPON solutions will enable us to win designs and grow our market share.”
