Enablence to intro 2.5G APDs and 88-channel AWG at ECOC

SEPTEMBER 15, 2009 -- Enablence will debut at least two products at this month’s European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communications (ECOC). The releases include two new avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and what the company asserts is the industry's first commercially available 88-channel 50-GHz AWG Multiplexer.

The releases include two new avalanche photodiodes (APDs) and what the company asserts is the industry's first commercially available 88-channel 50-GHz AWG Multiplexer.

Enablence says the AWG multiplexer/demultiplexer will offer long-haul equipment vendors an off-the-shelf option for optical mux/demux that doubles the capacity of what was previously available in the industry. The compact device is fabricated using Enablence’s proprietary silica-on-silicon CVD process.

The product is commercially available and now shipping in volume. The device uses a flat-top filter shape and is available in multiple packaging options including external thermal control, internal thermal control, and athermal.
Meanwhile, Enablence's two new 2.5-Gbps InGaAs APDs are now available for volume orders. The APD60T-XS is a top-illuminated APD that combines a large optical aperture of 60 µm with a low chip capacitance. The APD85B-XS is bottom illuminated for easy coupling to PLC substrates, features an optical aperture of 85 µm, and has a gain-bandwidth product of 50 GHz.

Both APD chips offer high responsitivity, low noise, and high speed of response in the 1260- to 1620-nm wavelength range, according to the company. The broadband anti-reflection coating provides low back reflection and high return loss over the full wavelength range. The small footprint saves space in small packages.

Enablence touts the devices as ideal for use in 2.5-Gbps GPON receivers and in SDH/SONET applications up to 2.7 Gbps for distances of 40 km or longer, as the new APDs are optimized for long-wavelength data and telecom applications.
