ADVA selects Xelerated's network processor for its carrier-class portfolio

APRIL 28, 2009 -- High-function NPU extends ADVA's Carrier Ethernet services into access and aggregation networks.

APRIL 28, 2009 -- Xelerated (search Lightwave for Xelerated), a supplier of Carrier Ethernet ASSP-based chipsets, says that ADVA Optical Networking (search Lightwave for ADVA) has deployed its X11 network processor unit (NPU) in the ADVA FSP 3000 WDM system.

Based on Xelerated's wirespeed dataflow architecture, the X11 is a high-function, low-cost processor that enables ADVA Optical Networking to extend its Carrier Ethernet services into fiber access and aggregation networks -- providing unified Ethernet-based technology for carriers and enterprises.

The processor is designed for carriers that need to transport and protect high-speed data, storage, voice, and video applications. According to the supplier, the chip's architecture guarantees deterministic, low latency packet behavior, regardless of packet size, traffic pattern, or number of instructions used per packet.

"Our carrier customers are looking for opportunities to extend their Carrier Ethernet and triple-play services into access and aggregation networks. The X11 provides us with the ability to do so, easily and cost-effectively without sacrificing performance," says Christoph Glingener, chief technology officer of ADVA Optical Networking. "The X11 is also adaptable, so we don't have to worry about buying new equipment to keep up with today's ever-changing standards."
