May 23, 2006 London -- Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks today announced they have been selected by the U.K. Education and Research Networking Association (UKERNA) to provide the routing equipment for a 10-Gbit/sec network, known as JANET, to support a range of broadband services for universities and education establishments in the U.K. Under the five-year framework contract between Lucent and UKERNA, Lucent will deploy and maintain the network routers, which will be based on core routing infrastructure from Lucent's global partner, Juniper Networks.
For the project, Lucent will supply UKERNA with Juniper Networks T-series core IP routing platforms designed to support broadband services nationwide, with points of presence in London, Bristol, Reading, Warrington, Glasgow, and Leeds. At the core of the network will be the Juniper Networks T640 Routing Node.
"We chose Lucent for this project because it was able to meet our need for a field-proven, highly reliable solution and also demonstrated the lowest overall total cost of ownership for the lifetime of the contract," explains Jeremy Sharp of UKERNA. "We are looking forward to working with Lucent and its partners on the deployment of this next-generation platform."
"JANET is now fully equipped to handle the long-term networking requirements of the U.K.'s education and research community, supporting IPv6, multicast, QoS and IPv6 multicast," adds Gert-Jan Schenk, vice president of operations EMEA, Juniper Networks. "Juniper is pleased to sustain its reputation as the foremost provider of networking technology for the research and development sector with this high profile opportunity."
