MARCH 26, 2010 -- Alphion Corp., a company that develops, manufactures, and markets communication systems, subsystems, and integrated photonic components based on its proprietary QLight technology, has introduced a new 7-pin Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) packaging solution.

The new package specifically targets applications such as transceivers and transponders, where space is at a premium. The package shares the same proven assembly technology and thermal properties as the 14-pin MSA butterfly package. By reducing pin count and moving the pins to one side of the package, significant space is saved. The new 7-pin SOA also offers placement flexibility as it can be mounted against the side of transponder or transceiver housing. The new package is available with tight bend radius fiber. This, combined with the shorter feed-through tubes, greatly reduces the overall length of the amplifier.
