AUGUST 13, 2010 -- VI Systems GmbH has introduced the first circular chip arrays using its vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with seven channels for data rates of up to 5 Gbps per channel.

AUGUST 13, 2010 -- VI Systems GmbH has introduced the first circular chip arrays using its vertical-cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with seven channels for data rates of up to 5 Gbps per channel. The operating wavelength of the VCSEL is specified with 850 nm. The chip arrays are available in a ring-like 6+1 channel configuration with one emitter in the center.

The chip arrays are designed for mounting via wire-bonding as well as flip-chip bonding. The VCSEL arrays can be contacted directly from the top and feature a high-speed pad layout.

Target applications are short reach and very short reach optical receivers and transceiver modules used in optical communication networks, as well as chip-to-chip optical interconnects in the computer industry. Future standards at or near 28 Gbps data rates currently under development include the Common Electrical Standard (CEI-25/28 Gbps) effort as well as in a number of custom specific application.
