SEPTEMBER 6, 2010 -- Source Photonics Inc., a subsidiary of MRV Communications, Inc., has announced a CWDM GPON OLT and ONT product family.

Source Photonics’ CWDM GPON OLT and ONT family is designed to provide an alternative, cost-effective way to expand the total capacity on a GPON to 10 Gbps or beyond. It is based on existing, mature GPON technology using multiple CWDM channels to expand the total capacity in the single fiber, says Source Photonics. CWDM provides a flexible network architecture and pay-as-you-grow abilities for service providers, enabling increased bandwidth from 2.5 to 12.5 Gbps downstream and from 1.25 to 6.25 Gbps upstream. The CWDM GPON transceivers are compliant with the existing GPON ITU standard G.984.2.

“With continuing bandwidth demand to support Internet video and 3G wireless network growth, 10G EPON and XG-PON are emerging in the market. However, 10G PON technology has not yet reached maturity and a competitive cost point,” said Darron Young, senior director of product line management at Source Photonics. “Our CWDM GPON transceivers are based on the existing, mature GPON products, and provide an immediate, alternative solution to allow service providers to expand their bandwidth with minimum investment.”

The CWDM GPON products are sampling now and are expected to be fully released for production in early 2011.

Source Photonics will display the CWDM GPON product family at the China International Optoelectronic Exhibition from September 6 to 9, 2010 in Shenzhen, China.
