SEPTEMBER 13, 2007 — IntexyS Photonics SA (Toulouse, France) developed a line of surface-mount optical devices (SMOD) to improve bandwidth and reliability in intra-system communications. The transceivers and receivers target system bottlenecks for 850-nm free-space and short-reach communications, such as on PCB, board-to-board, and rack-to-rack.

Assembled with wafer-level flip-chip technology, the 3- × 2-mm multi-chip package houses an 85-nm photodiode and TIA electronics. It can be used with or without wires, and accommodates serial or parallel array communications and multiple protocols.

Usage areas range from data centers and server farms to supercomputers and large enterprise systems, or other high-performance systems requiring increase bandwidth. The product family is available from 4- to 10-Gbit/sec data rates. The company claims that these SMODs provide higher port densities at lower costs than conventional products.
