Sabeus to demo low-phase-noise DFB laser at Photonics West

The company's demonstration will take place in booth #6035.

According to Sabeus, the AG-1 laser features 100× more signal precision than standard DFB lasers, making it suitable for applications that need both durability and precision such as high-precision optical test systems and high-bandwidth fiber-optic communications systems.

Telecom systems providers can benefit from the laser's signal stability to create ultradense wavelength-division multiplexing (UDWDM) networks with up to 68 Gbits/sec per wavelength for metropolitan and long-distance networks compared to today's 40-Gbit/sec efforts.

The AG-1 is the first Sabeus product to implement the company's patent-pending Multi Variable Control System (MVCS) for dynamic signal feedback, which delivers an effective linewidth of 10 to 400 kHz and short-term frequency stability of ±5 MHz for a reported improvement of approximately two orders of magnitude over today's state-of-the-art semiconductor lasers.

The laser's narrow linewidth offers high signal coherency for accurate measurements over long distances. Tunable across C- and L-bands, with a tuning range of 3 nm and a minimum step size of 0.5 pm, the AG-1 reduces overall system cost because a 1:1 sparing ration is not required in systems that operate at multiple wavelengths, the company claims.

The AG-1 has an optical output level between 10 and 50 mW and typically consumes 4 W of power. Housed within its 76×102×12.7-mm package are a thermoelectric cooler, laser driver, power regulator, and embedded microprocessor for control.
