Velio reaches new levels of consumption for its SerDes products

June 20, 2001--Velio Communications, Inc., a provider of high bandwidth communications semiconductors, announced it has achieved new levels of integration and power consumption for its family of high-performance SerDes backplane transceivers.

Velio Communications, Inc., a provider of high bandwidth communications semiconductors, announced it has achieved new levels of integration and power consumption for its family of high-performance SerDes (serializer/deserializer) backplane transceivers - sampling a Quad 3.125 Gbps device housed in a 17mm x 17mm package that consumes only 1.5 watts.

As a result, Velio has extended its benchmarks for what the company claims is the lowest powered and smallest packaged backplane transceivers, and offers an excellent intra-system signaling solution for designers of high-performance networking equipment, such as 10 Gigabit Ethernet systems and OC-192 SONET/SDH optical systems, as well as SAN systems built around the InfiniBand and Fibre Channel standards.

Velio's innovations in signal integrity enable systems to be built with more than a meter of FR4 printed circuit board (PCB) trace length, including two backplane connectors. This doubles the objective described in XAUI (10 Gigabit eXtended Attachment Unit Interface), the emerging 10 Gbps Ethernet standard, which targets the distance objective across a PCB to 50cm and a connector. System designers looking to utilize the multilane 3.125 Gbps technique can now design new systems or extend the life of existing systems that employ electrical backplanes. Velio has also demonstrated interoperability of its SerDes with optical transceiver devices.

The VC1013 and VC1012 are Quad 3.125 Gbps and Quad 2.5 Gbps devices respectively. They are the most recent additions to the VC1000 family of SerDes announced by Velio in January 2001. Built using a 0.18 micron CMOS process, these products are based on Velio's multi-patent-pending Gigacores, which are robust multi-gigabit rate mixed signal serial I/O cores that have been in development by Velio's signaling experts.

The VC1013 and VC1012 SerDes are sampling now, and evaluation boards are also available. Production quantities of the devices are available in Q3. Pricing of the VC1013 Quad 3.125 Gbps SerDes starts at $60 each in quantities of 1,000.
