MARCH 25, 2009 -- Discovery Semiconductors Inc. (search Lightwave for Discovery Semiconductors) is demonstrating its "Kitty Hawk" 10-Gbps coherent optical OOK system for 300-km metro systems using all-electrical dispersion compensation at OFC/NFOEC 2009 (Booth #3123). The heterodyne system allows for passive linear electrical dispersion compensation. It is combined with AMCC's (search Lightwave for AMCC) second-generation clock and data recovery (CDR) with integrated electronic dispersion compensation (EDC) to compensate residual impairments such as polarization mode dispersion (PMD). The soft decision EDC (AMCC S3394) is used in conjunction with AMCC's Rubicon-LH enhanced forward error correction (S19227). Discovery Semiconductors says the demo highlights error-free reception of 10-Gbps data over 300 km of standard singlemode fiber "with no optical dispersion compensation whatsoever."

"Enabling network operators the flexibility to transmit 10-Gbps traffic to distances up to 300 km without adding costly optical dispersion compensation and optical amplification was a key motivation in our development of the Kitty Hawk coherent system," says Jim Rue, manager of high speed products at Discovery Semiconductors. "Our ready-to-deploy coherent system combined with AMCC's industry-leading 10G IC technology allows for cost-effective upgrades of 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps or new 10-Gbps installations up to 300 km. We are very grateful to AMCC for their best-in-class customer support of their commercially-proven 10G EDC and FEC chipsets."

"We are very pleased and impressed with the 300-km transmission results that Discovery has achieved with their coherent system and our S3394 EDC and S19227 Rubicon-LH chipset," says Subhash Roy, chief technology officer, transport, at AMCC. "Discovery Semiconductors is an innovative partner who has proven that our 10G IC solutions are easily incorporated into long-haul systems which span well beyond their original target of 100 km."
