II-VI sampling 400G CFP2-DCO coherent optical transceiver
II‐VI Inc. (NASDAQ:IIVI) says it now has a 400G coherent CFP2-DCO optical transceiver available for sampling. The company expects the optical module, which also will support 200G transmission, to achieve general availability in the second half of this year.
The CFP2-DCO transceiver leverages a 7-nm CMOS coherent DSP to enable single-wavelength 400G via 64-GBaud 16QAM modulation. The module can be tuned across 64 wavelengths on a 75-GHz grid, which enables a single fiber to support 25.6 Tbps. II-VI didn’t quote reach estimates at 400G.
“This 400G coherent optics module leverages our mature integrated tunable transceiver assembly, or ITTRA, coherent optics platform, which has been shipping for over a year,” said Matthias Berger, vice president, Coherent Optics Business Unit, at II-VI. “Our ITTRA is the key reason we expect to become the first in the industry to reach volume manufacturing with such a product, and that’s quite exciting.” The ITTRA earned a 4.5 rating in the 2019 Lightwave Innovation Reviews.
At 200G, the module uses 64-GBaud QPSK modulation, which enables longer reach than alternatives based on 32-GBaud 16QAM modulation, II-VI points out. An optional mode based on 41-GBaud 16QAM modulation with enhanced OSNR performance is available for applications that require 50-GHz wavelength spacing, the company adds.
The module is designed to multiplex up to four 100G client signals and support a mix of IEEE 100 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) and ITU-T Optical Transport Network OTU4 or OTUC (FlexO) host side interfaces. The CFP2-DCO also will support IEEE 200GbE, 400GbE, and ITU-T OTUC2, OTUC3, and OTUC4 host side interfaces.
