Acacia shipping 1.2-Tbps CIM 8 optical module

Feb. 9, 2023
Tier 1 carrier network operators are conducting field trials of system line cards with the module, the company adds.

Acacia, now part of Cisco, announced via a blog that it launched shipments of its 1.2-Tbps capable Coherent Interconnect Module 8 (CIM 8) to customers at the end of last year. Tier 1 carrier network operators are conducting field trials of system line cards with the module, the company adds.

The company unveiled the CIM 8 in September 2021 alongside the Jannu DSP (see "Acacia Communications unveils Jannu coherent DSP, 1.2-Tbps optical module plans"). The pluggable module comes in a proprietary form factor that is slightly larger than a CFP2. The eighth-generation Jannu 5-nm DSP ASIC at the module's heart, meanwhile, supports continuous baud rate adjustment up to 140 Gbaud. Jannu is powerful enough to support a wide range of applications, including trans-Pacific submarine cables, according to the company.

“The ability to maximize transmission data rate across a wide range of multi-haul network applications is key for cost-effectively scaling networks,” said Bill Gartner, senior vice president and general manager, Optical Systems and Optics Group at Cisco. “Not only does the CIM 8 deliver exceptional performance, but it also consumes less than half the power per bit of competing solutions, allowing us to support terabit transmission with a small pluggable module.”

“Shipping CIM 8 Terabit Era optical transceivers with 140-Gbaud capability to customers and seeing them tested in carrier networks is very exciting,” added Mehrdad Givehchi, vice president of engineering for Acacia. “Delivering the highest channel capacity and longest reach with maximum fiber utilization, the CIM 8 transceiver enables a wide range of multi-haul network applications including DCI, metro, long-haul, and subsea.”
